For Stones

My boyfriend James is writing a story called The Stones of Arzingdale. When he started to write it as a blog I agreed to draw some images to go along with it. I’ve been putting off drawing the characters for ages because I don’t feel confident making up people, especially clothing. However, I put aside my worries and started drawing. My first three are gods within his story.

BREATH TAKING: an exhibition at the DLI (Durham)

A Crafts Council touring exhibition which is in Durham’s DLI Museum July 9th 2011 – August 29th 2011.

I was volunteering at the exhibition opening on Friday and wow, it is a wonderful exhibition which lives up to its name.

22 artists’ works are displayed there and everything is made from blown glass concentrating on the use of breath to create. There are also 2 films playing about the art.

These beautiful glass jars full of glass eggs by James Maskrey were one of my favourite pieces.

I had a wonderful opportunity that night to be at that opening in a position of responsibility. I met some wonderful people, saw some fantastic artwork and got a taste of working in a museum environment.

Hopefully I will have many similar experiences in my future, although perhaps less where I worry over the fragility of the work!

Completed Coffee Creations

A delayed blog post this may be but it is the last one about this particular project.
My coffee creations have been marked and brought home to Durham.

I’ve been revising and painting a lot but today I am not going to share any photos of my mugs.
I haven’t edited my most recent images yet because of time restraints but I have made some videos.

I’m looking forward to finishing up this project and putting it into a display situation. I’ll write up soon about my recent additions but for now I’m hitting my notes as my art history exam is tomorrow morning!

Conversations with the Collection (Part 1)

Before the Easter holidays I applied through Involve (our Uni’s volunteer organisation) with the hope to be involved with the third part of Conversations with the Collection.

Our University has an art gallery called the Peter Scott gallery and a few years ago Richard Smith became the new curator. He wanted to utilise the collection and get the people Lancaster to contribute to decisions over what is shown.

The third of these conversations will take place from now until May next year.
Groups of students from Lancaster University will be working in local schools to create art that is inspired by work from the gallery’s collection.

I was interviewed a few weeks ago and I am proud to be involved in the Project.

As part of our planning and preparation we (The other students, Carys and Joe [involve], Richard [curator] and I) were invited to Greenclose Studios to meet Sue Flowers, an artist who will be working with us on this project.

It was a wonderful trip that involved thinking up a symbol that described what you were bringing to the project and drawing it and then inking it and then joining all our pieces of card together.
We also spent time planning a task that we will hopefully use during our launch events next month!

I found my day at the studios extremely inspiring and I’m buzzing with excitement for the rest of this project.

Hopefully, I’ll get to meet the head teacher of the school I’ll be working with on Tuesday so we can discuss what aspects of the collection she wants the students to focus on!

Donations!

Last weekend I sent out an email to a few coffee shop companies.
I heard back from 3 of them.
One said they’d mail my local store and let them know I was coming. They didn’t because I called in and they wouldn’t give me a cup.
I called in Café Nero because they hadn’t replied and I got given a mug!
Starbucks said I’d have to call in my local branch because they were too big a company to deal with this sort of request.
Esquires SENT ME A MUG!
They have been by far the best company I have dealt with. I’m going to try and do my best painting in that mug so I can send Peter a picture of it.

Holiday habits

I drifted from regular updates this month. I’ve been making videos every other day and been learning my Art History things.

So, one of the things I’ve done that’s artsy this holiday is ice these cakes.

The lack of control I have over the icing tubes is silly.

I’m so used to be able to put a line of paint, pencil or pen exactly where I want it. The unpredictability of icing is something I’ve not adapted to yet.

I’d love to learn though.

I hope to be back with more once I get back into my studio in Lancaster.
